Peter Slipper is odds with his own party leader Malcolm Turnbull on climate change laws.
Mr Slipper told ABC radio this morning that Mr Turnbull's leadership was definitely on the line because of the appalling way he has handled the issue.
"I think Malcolm Turnbull's leadership is a bit wobbly at the moment,'' the Member for Fisher said.
"I think it is a question of watch this space.''
This morning, former Howard government Minister Kevin Andrews declared he would run at the leadership.
But just after noon, Mr Turnbull survived a party room vote at noon with 48 MPs in support and 35 against.
Party room sources have told the Australian that the vote was 41-32 against climate change laws.
Mr Slipper said Mr Turnbull had added the votes of the shadow leadership to those in the party room to claim he had a majority.
"I think it is just incredible for someone to walk out of the party room and declare black is white,'' he said.
Last night, Mr Slipper told the Daily he would defy his own party leader and cross the floor to vote against climate change laws he described as “national economic suicide”.
The Liberal MP said the government’s emissions trading scheme would lead to more “cheap, nasty Chinese food” on our tables, higher electricity prices, and the loss of investment in Australia and thousands of jobs, without making any difference to world pollution.
Mr Slipper said while the coalition had secured important changes, the legislation was still a “mangy dog” and there should be a secret ballot on the issue among conservatives.
MR Slipper said the conservative party room was split down the middle despite calls from leader Malcolm Turnbull to support the legislation.
He said he had been inundated with calls and emails from Coast residents angrily opposing the Rudd plan.
Mr Slipper said his Maroochydore office received some 30 calls from residents yesterday morning alone.
“There is no doubt that people are becoming more and more angry about these new laws and concerned about the massive impact they will have on everyday prices, without making one iota of difference to pollution levels,” Mr Slipper said.
“In terms of volume of contacts on the one issue, this is by far the biggest concern locally in quite a while.”
Mr Slipper has been a strong critic of the legislation, arguing in parliament that it would destroy the competitiveness of Australian exports and result in the importation of more foreign food and goods.
With Australia’s emissions representing 1.4% of the global output, and China’s emissions increasing by a similar amount every eight months, Mr Slipper said the legislation was a “feel good” measure that would have no positive impact at all.
He said it was madness for Australia to jump the gun on the issue just so Kevin Rudd could strut on the world stage at the climate change conference in Copenhagen.
“Your grandchildren will be paying for this debt,” he said of the multi-billion dollar cost of the new compensation package.
The member for Fisher said his party should stand up for farmers and business people rather than being pressured by the government.
“We should not blink because there is a threat of a double dissolution,” he said.
Mr Slipper said whether climate change was the result of human activity was an open question, with studies supporting both sides of the argument.
“A lot of the so-called scientific evidence is sus(pect),” he said, citing reports of alleged fraud involving overseas studies on climate change."

This ETS the Rudd government is pushing is bordering on lunacy, all because Rudd wants to be Ambassador to the UN and further fuel his vanity

Thanks, Peter Slipper. Let sanity prevail. Labor are on a road to ruin Australia. Try to convince your colleagues it is better to run the gauntlet of a double dissolution than to bend to vain politics and fear of another election defeat.

Good on You Pete! I agree many studies on global warming are affected by the groupthink syndrome and focus way too much on carbon emmissions and too little on deforestation.Basic high school geography will clearly demonstrate the symptoms of reduced rainfall from lower evapotranspiration (water cycling from underground into the atmosphere via plant leaves) and general and localized increases in lower level temperature from the Heat Island effect (temperature increases associated with urban and cleared landscapes) these will arise from land clearing practices.
The planet is not exhibiting upper level temperature increases which would be the case if carbon dioxide was the main cause.
Then there is the historical evidence of recent climate fluctuations prior to industrial activity. How many of these experts take into account that NZ glaciers have been in rapid retreat for centuries as just 1 example. Most deserts are the result of land clearing practices in preindustrial times eg The Sahara. A single large volcanic eruption has in the past proven to have exceeded human co2 emmissions in one hit. There is lots of historical evidence that this happens a lot anyway but humans have removed most of the active buffer zone that largely keeps the balance - VEGETATION

isnt it nice that our local MP is so far out of touch with reality?
maybe Mr Bean has been pushing for more sand on coast beaches so he too can shove his head in it?
Get real Mr Bean. No single action will save the planet from rampant consumerism and capatilaism gone rabid, but every action taken will add to every other action taken, and maybe we might just save this little blue planet.
Your sticking to the far right party line is sick.
Your kow towing to the capitalists is sick.
This planet is sick and needs little steps such as the ETS.
BTW - how did you get your party hacks up so early that they were the first two to comment?

The current Federal Gov't. is out of control.
However, Malcoln Turnbull has now turned his back on all voters both Liberal and Labor.
Electricity recently went up over 20% in June or July, now we are going to be 'screwed' again..
All Utility services to rise.....plus food costs.
These Two Party Leaders should be in a Circus because they act like Clowns.

It makes perfect sense for Mr Slipper to oppose the concept of engaging with climate change. It is a reflection of the attitudes of his electoral base. and his desire to stay on the Right side of Them.

Well in his time as a member of the Howard Liberal Government, the Hon. Peter Slipper was classed as the most ineffectual MP in Canberra, and that was by both sides of Politics and the Press Gallery and while in Government.
The Hon. Peter Slipper MP has along with around 45% of his fellow Federal Liberal/National elected members, now mortally wounded their current leader Malcolm Turnbull. Disunity is death in politics. Malcolm Turnbull and the Liberals are now Federally unelectable.
The Hon. Peter Slipper MP and co have ensured that Kevin Rudd and the Labour party will be returned to control Australia’s finances and international policies for another 3 years.
As the Sunshine Coast blindly votes Conservative at each and every election it really is Sunshine Coast Liberal supporters and card carrying members who should accept the blame.
It is local Liberal Party branch members who should acknowledge the Hon. Peter Slipper is in fact useless and more often than not an embarrassment.
It is local branch members who have constantly re-endorsed Mr Slipper.
Quality candidates such as Mal Brough and Peter Dutton were given bell ringer seats, (ie marginals that are first to be lost when a swing is on.)
Incidentally both Mal Brough and Peter Dutton came into Federal Parliament well after Peter Slipper but served as Ministers of the Crown while Peter Slipper’s lack of talent ensured he remained a permanent backbencher.
The Hon. Peter Slipper MP has be endorsed as the Liberal candidate to recontest the Federal seat at the next Federal election which will most probably be called before May – June next year 2010.
If he is again returned there is no one else to blame but ourselves.

Further to my comments, it has now been reported that,
A FEDERAL Liberal MP has compared Malcolm Turnbull to Zimbabwe dictator Robert Mugabe.
Peter Slipper made the comments after the Opposition Leader declared the joint parties room had accepted Coalition amendments to Labor's emissions trading scheme (ETS).
"The Leader last night was about as dodgy as a Zimbabwean election organised by Robert Mugabe," Mr Slipper said today.
"I'd don't want to make any comment other than that."

Oh dear vanga how wonderfully emotional. Let's try a few unemotional facts. Australia could stop emitting carbon completely, now this instant and it would not register on any chart anywhere. ETS will cause a financial impost on every average Australian. Not the poor they are covered. Not the rich they are insulated. Now to your anti-capitalist rant, Who do you think is going to make the most money out of an ETS? The brokers of course, but I guess they are not capitalists. As for the whole climate change-global warming case I suggest you move away from the media and check a few scientific forums, where to put it kindly, there is a hung jury.

Why are we jumping the gun on this?
Why are we making commitments before the the rest of world make their commitments, especially USA, Europe, China, India?
Yes, healthy debate is required.
Yes, we should be positioned to act.
And Yes, we need to fully understand and be signed up for economic mitigation as a result of ETS.
If there is consensus at Copenhagen then fine; we then have a baseline established that we can move forwards from. Until then - it is all hot air!
I dont think Mr Bean is 'kow towing' to anyone. He quite plainly recognizes there is no economic mitigation in place. ETS is a life changing business changing event and we had better wake up to it. We are just not getting the guidance, the assistance or sufficient information to plan adequately for our business and economic futures - that is the scary bit.

Thank you for some logic, Vanga. The first two comments are shamefully solely political avoiding any facts. The third comment directly contradicts itself as his repeated solution of reVEGETATION is an ETS goal. This local "expert" also defies the global majority of professional scientists, nations and even corporations seeking solutions. For those with vision, there is a new economy awaiting with extensive inventions, jobs and profits perhaps raising us from the GFC and assuring our long-term benefits despite short-term costs. Many in opposition, such as Peter, think their partisan role is solely to object, unlike Malcolm who has responsibly led a compromised rational solution. Dissolution may be best to identify and sort out those unproductive professional pollies, such as Peter Slipper, and provide more and better representative candidate choices.

It is very predictable that close to an election we hear Federal MP Peter Slipper shouting at the top of his lungs to attract maximum attention.
But actually what can Mr Slipper achieve by this?
In fact what actually has Mr Slipper delivered?
Well he has ensured Malcolm Turnbull will never be Prime Minister.
In fact possibly no Liberal currently in Federal Parliament may gain the confidence of the Australian population in the near future.
Mr Slipper has by this latest stunt probably ensured enough exposure that will see his slim margin hold him on for another term.
So he’s ok, his Parliamentary Superannuation and multi million dollar pension fund will continue to grow.
Inept politicians often have as their main aim to simply achieve longevity as a sitting MP.
No one can argue that Peter Slipper has been there a very long time, especially for a man as unpopular as he is and is lacking in any real qualities that we can be proud of.
Parents should ask themselves, can you honestly say to your kids, ‘Hey junior take a leaf out of that Peter Slipper’s book, when you grow up I’d be so proud to say that’s my boy (or girl).”
Remembering of course his well documented antics including:
• questionable removal from a notorious ACT Bar around 2 or 3 am on a Parliamentary sitting day,
• Removal from a QANTAS flight under the influence of Alcohol and/or Prescription drugs,
• Being rescued from a Parliament (handicap) toilet after locking himself in after Christmas drinks.
Now we can add another expression of undying loyalty to his CV.
(Many may remember Peter Slipper undermined John Howard by supporting the Joh for PM crusade over 2 decades ago.
Some Leopards just can’t change their spots.

I am, obviously, not a conservative voter. So you know I have no ulterior motive when I say that Malcolm Turnbull could shape up to be the best thing that's happened to the Opposition since Little Johnny - maybe even Big Mal himself - and look at him now!
MT's and the Opposition's problem is senile, neanderthal thugs like Wilson Tuckey holding them back.
Having said this about Tuckey, I strongly point out that at least he, yes EVEN he, is off his butt, out there and making a ruckus - always. He's got something to say and he's active.
This is far better than the very expensive waste of space that is Peter Slipper. It's way past time we were rid of this leech. Waaaaaayyyyyy past time..........

From ninemsn -
"The leader last night was about as dodgy as a Zimbabwean election organised by Robert Mugabe," Mr Slipper told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday.
"I don't want to make any comment other than that."
Outspoken Liberal MP Wilson Tuckey said Mr Turnbull risked leading the coalition to electoral oblivion and losing his own seat at the next election if he remained leader.
"The issue is whether my colleagues want to change the leader, who in my opinion, will continue to drag us to a position where we'll be lucky to return to this place with 10 or 12 seats, and he won't be one of them," Mr Tuckey told reporters in Canberra."
Disloyal, backward, old rednecks like Tuckey and Sleeper are what will lead the Opposition to "electoral oblivion" - and Malcolm knows it. The Australian people have moved and are demanding action while these shiny-arsed cretins are still in the 60's - and Malcolm KNOWS IT.
"I don't want to make any comment other than that.", says Sleeper. Oh, don't worry, Peter. You've said it all.
I hope all you ultra-conservative, right wing, bible-bashing, righteous types (voters) are taking note of what it is to be a lazy, manipulative, duplicitous, back-stabbing traitor - just so you know what you're voting for next time.

Can anyone actually explain how ETS would reduce emissions? It's a trading scheme - if I'm allowed to use 100 units of pollution, but only use 75, I can sell the other 25 to someone who needs more than their allocation, so my initial 100 units are still used, hence no reduction. Is that correct? If so, what is the point?

The actions of the Leader of the Federal Opposition in his party-room meeting yesterday clearly shows that he wants his way even if it maybe wrong. To walk out of that meeting shows that he is clearly intent on getting his own way especially when it comes to lending support to the governments Carbon Emission Trading Scheme. Since 9am today, I have been listening to the parliamentary broadcast from the Senate and as someone who has followed its operation for nearly 4 decades now; how many leaders of a parliamentary wing have walked out of a meeting and declared a win? Yes, I remain very concerned at this country's federal political scene and 44 senators decided to allow the Senate (on a motion moved by the government) to sit extra hours today and 19 opposed the motion. Leaving that figure aside but is worthy of some consideration, it is all about giving Kevin Rudd what he wants even though, the United States Senate has deferred further debate on their legislation which is similar to Australia's. Peter Slipper like a majority of others within the parliamentary wing aren't happy at what took place yesterday and the desire of Mr Turnbull to give the government want it wants. With Mr Turnbull now in a party-rooom meeting where he has sought a show of hands for him to remain parliamentary wing maybe a interesting tactic in the short-term but like other media commentators, his days are numbered. Senator Bob Brown isn't happy with the cosiness between the government and the opposition re the need for the ETS and yet, anything can happen over the next 48 hours but; could the government use the gullitine later tonight or tomorrow to force a earlier vote? Unfortunately, we as Australians aren't having our concerns addressed by government - where we have oppositions that aren't affective and also have an inability to engage with our politicians.

How can we sit back and watch the government get its way when it could cost each of us upwards to at least $5000 in the coming years? We know that the compensation package amount has been reduced and even Kevin Rudd said to the House that families wouldn't be worse off. As the party-room meeting is now underway, the Liberal Party needs to have a close look at itself over the Christmas New Year break.
Even the Nationals aren't impressed with the government's desire to get its way re the ETS.

It is such a shame that the only debate about the virtues of an ETS were held between the Coalition members. Where is the public debate? Why do we have three parties all talking the same language but in different dialects? We have:
1. The green warriors who want to send the world back to the dark ages.
2. The government who want to look green at the expense of their traditional working class voters (who will be either out of work or paying through the nose for everyday services, or both)
3. The Libs who wish to avoid a double-disillusion election at any cost.
The only party that has stood firm on the issue of a ETS is the Nationals. Without them we would not have any debate at all. The Libs have done themselves a gave disservice. They should have refused Labours ETS and come up with their own plans to improve the environment which did not require the "chicken little" climate change argument. They should have been debating the government not themselves. The should be going to the next election with a creditable alternative to the ridiculous ETS. But they didn't. What hope is there now that?
My only suggestion is for the decenting Libs to leave the party, join the Nats and disassociate themselves from the broken Libs until such time as they start working for the country and not their jobs.

So annoying that the heart of this issue..."climate change" is being pushed aside because of poorly designed political party standards.
I don't see a big problem with people in the same party having differing views on various issues as the Coalition does, but Australian Politics has evolved to the point where the big parties expect everyone to be united on all issues. This is a bit ridiculous really - I can't see how that reflects on reality, even very similar minded people with similar values will have certain things they don't agree on. US politicians belong to a party but they are not bound to "toe the party line" like Australian politicians are. Lo and behold they still manage to make decisions in a functional manner without this ridiculous notion that all members of a party should agree on all issues.
If the Rudd Government is as serious as they say they are about combatting climate change, they should have designed an ETS that takes in all industries and actually makes a difference. Instead we are now facing a pathetic watered down ETS that rewards polluters and will do little to actually reduce carbon emissions.

Thank you Mr Slipper for your racist old fashioned right wing comments. Maybe you could have stood up to the "zimbabwean dictator" and contributed to the amendments for the ETS like Ian McFarlane.
Agriculture is out, more compensation for the electricity generators is included etc. Just saying "NO" to the ETS is lazy. Maybe if you broadened your horizons and ate some home cooked chinese food using local produce from local farmers markets and butchers in the Sunshine coast area you would learn something about the real world. There is more to Chinese food than Kan Tong sauces and Continental Oriental 2 minute Noodles.
I hope the next tax-payer funded overseas trip you take is to an earthquake ravaged slum in Indonesia or China so you can see how other less fortunate people live.
I suspect that you regret not standing up for your democratic rights when you had the chance to tap John Howard on the shoulder before the 2007 federal election. Please do something more constructive for your sunshine coast electorate. Thank you.

I thought this was the slag Malcolm off line, I didn't expect that there was going to be exams or anything when I took my place.
Things were much easier for me when my Press Secretary was with me all the time.

Like many bloggers I have been caught up in the stupidity of Slipper's attack on his own leader.
His ultimate stupidity is to deny climate change is happening, especially when the Susnhine Coast will be one region hit hard. Our low coastal plains, home to hundreds of thousands of people (not to mention much of our commercial, industrial and government infrastructure) is threatened by rising sea levels.
Slipper is like the once a year gambler who puts his money on the outsider at the Melbourne Cup. No logic, no reasoning, no science. Just close your eyes and hope your luck works on the day.
The Sunshine Coast, indeed the planet, needs more than dumb luck. That's why leaders of countries from all around the world are working out how to address climate change.
Pretending it isn't happening is no longer an option.
