Big weekend coming up for sailors

There will be plenty of sailing action this weekend with fleets from both Hervey Bay Sailing Club and the Hervey Bay Boat Club Yacht Squadron hitting the water.

This weekend will be a big weekend of sailing for the Fraser Coast.

THIS weekend is shaping up as a big one for the sailors of the Fraser Coast.

There will be plenty of sailing action this weekend, with fleets from both Hervey Bay Sailing Club and the Hervey Bay Boat Club Yacht Squadron hitting the water – and the weather looks like it will be perfect for a great weekend of racing.

Forecasts look good, with fine weather and northerly 10 to 15 knots winds anticipated this weekend – and nice change from the strong winds that sailors have had to contend with of late.

Hervey Bay Sailing Club will be holding its annual multihull challenge on Sunday while the yacht squadron will be racing around Woody Island on Sunday.

The boats will complete a lap of Woody Island. The race will take about three hours.

Daryl Dorsett won the last race around Woody Island, on board Pork Chop in August.

Boats from Bundaberg, Gympie, Lake Cootharabra and Brisbane will be coming to compete on the weekend.

The first race will kick off at 11.30am on Saturday.

More than 30 sailors are expected to take part.

Bundaberg sailor Mathew Caldwell is expected to put in a big performance and will be hard to beat on handicap.

Peter York, from Hervey Bay Sailing Club, is expected to produce a strong performance as well.

This regatta will be the last before the state and national titles get underway, meaning several of the sailors will be using the event to hone their skills ahead of these big races.
