Victoria Cross recipient Keith Payne is set to open a new Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum exhibit.
VICTORIA Cross winner and Vietnam War hero Keith Payne is coming to Maryborough in March fresh from 13 days in Vietnam helping the American team that attempts to recover bodies of deceased servicemen and women from the Pacific area.
Mr Payne, who came to Maryborough in 2007 to unveil his carved wooden bust now in the museum, will open the Gallipoli Room in the Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum on March 20.
“We were going to open the room on March 13,” museum founder John Meyers said yesterday.
“But the Americans have requested Keith and Gerry Dellwo, the US medic travelling with them in 1969, to accompany them to Da Nang to try and locate the remains of Sergeant First Class Montez who commanded the right flank company (and Keith the left) during the action for which Keith was awarded the Victoria Cross on May 24, 1969.”
Mr Meyers said he and his museum volunteers had worked for six months on getting the room together – at a cost of $40,000.
“Other than Victoria Crosses the room contains the most significant collection of Gallipoli medals in the world.
“We have 65 medals for 65 soldiers decorated on Gallipoli – mostly Australians. We also have 40 medals to 40 officers killed there, out of the 370 Australian officers killed.
“The Australian War Memorial has nine Gallipoli VCs but it does not have gallantry medals to as many soldiers as what we have in our Gallipoli Room.”
Mr Meyers said he was expecting people from all over Australia to come to the opening at the Wharf Street museum.

Dear FC Chronicle Editor
I am pleased that you and the FC Chronicle are conducting an "audit" of the FC Regional Council, particularly the Councillors who self-assessed and evaluated their own performances, reported their "passed" ratings resulting into their own mandated salary increase. Such "increase in salary and allowances" without direct proportional increase in their accountabilities, and responsibilities proved that if ratepayers and voters would assess their performances, they (Councillors) will never get an increase in pay let alone pass the assessment by the people of FC!!
Here is an example: Any employee of FCRC will never get a promotion unless that person has undergone an assessment by supervisor and manager whose recommendation for such promotion, ie increase in salary is forwarded to Human Resources manager for further assessment and if HR Manager approved the promotion for that employee, a further approval by the Executive Manager or Director of the Department concernced will be sought and lastly the CEO. This shows how difficult it is for any employee of FCRC to get a promotion let alone increase in salary in comparison with Councillors giving themselves increase of salaries plus perks.
With blackhole of $8M (round up figures) of FCRC, ratepayers and the whole community should seriously consider new people to manage this Council.
I also wonder if anyone has audited the alcohol expenditures of FC Regional Council, let alone the expenses it incurred on logos and stationery.
I wish that in 2012 Fraser Coast would have nurturing, caring and humanitarian candidates to run for local government positions.
I trust that the editor and staff of FC Chronicle would take this suggestions and comment on board.
Thanking you all
