A 39-year-old woman was trapped for almost an hour when the car she was driving crashed into a fence in Eli Waters yesterday.
A WITNESS to a crash in Eli Waters yesterday claimed the car involved went past him “at a million miles an hour”.
Gary Ryan of Point Vernon was parked on the side of Ibis Boulevard when he looked up to see a car hurtle off the road and smash into a brick front fence.
The force of the impact crumpled the front of the Nissan Pulsar, trapping the 39-year-old female driver inside.
“I rushed to the car to get the two children out as fast as I could because I thought it may catch fire,” he said.
“There was smoke coming out of the dash. I just wanted to make sure the kids were safe.”
Gary did manage to free the children, a boy, 4, and girl, 7.
Both were suffering shock and had minor cuts and bruising. In the meantime the mother remained trapped in the car.
Emergency services were quickly on the scene and managed to cut her free while ambulance officers looked after the children.
All three were taken to Hervey Bay Hospital where their conditions last night were reported to be stable.
The mother suffered a broken leg in the accident.
Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
An ambulance spokesman said the fact that the children escaped with minor injuries reflected again the importance of strapping the kids in when driving.
“If they hadn’t have been wearing seat belts their injuries would have been much more serious,” he said.
