EVERY year, 1500 people die on Australian roads – over 300 of them in Queensland alone. And for every fatality a further 10 people are injured. These frightening statistics are the reason Russell White, driver safety advocate and founder of www.driversafety.com.au, initiated Fatality Free Friday in 2007.

“We started with the idea that if we get people to reflect on their road use for just one day – whether as a driver, passenger or pedestrian – we could ensure that no one died on our roads,” said event founder Russell White.

In an effort to make the road toll zero, the organisers have enlisted the support of thousands of Australians, including a sponsorship by Suncorp CTP Insurance.

Suncorp Executive General Manager CTP Insurance, Neil Singleton said, “Suncorp CTP Insurance is once again proud to be involved with Fatality Free Friday. It is a great opportunity to help reduce the road toll and prevent further tragedies.”

This year, Fatality Free Friday 2010 will take place on 28 May. You can support this worthwhile safety initiative by pledging to drive safely at www.fatalityfreefriday.com. By doing so, you’ll be joining thousands of Australians who will make a promise to stay alive while they drive.

Simply fill in the form and then print out your pledge certificate to pin up at work or at home to remind others to drive safely. You should also encourage your family and friends to make the pledge to support zero deaths on Australia’s roads.

You can also get involved in one of the many events being held on the day. Come along and show your support at the event to be held at Radacliffe Place in Brisbane’s CBD on Fatality Free Friday. Volunteers from Suncorp Insurance will be there to help encourage pledges and to display 1500 shoes that represent the lives lost on Australian roads over the past year.

So, whether you make a pledge for Fatality Free Friday or join in any of the associated events, you’ll be playing your part in keeping Australians safe on our roads and reducing the road toll.
