Helping hand: Lisa and Peter Nugent with baby Mia Hannah, who had a surprise home birth on Monday with the help of paramedics Keith McArdle, Natalie Creighton-Jay and Cameron Evers.
LITTLE Mia Nugent may be too young to realise it, but she gave her mother the type of speedy birth most women pray for.
In fact, the newborn came into the world so quickly, her surprised mum had no choice but to give birth on the floor at home.
Lisa Nugent had already been to hospital for a false labour, so when her baby girl did decide to arrive, she thought it could be another false alarm.
Taking it easy and trying to avoid calling an ambulance, the Tinana woman didn’t realise until the last minute that Mia was really on her way.
Ms Nugent’s own mother was looking after her and her dad was on his way to take her to the hospital when the two women realised there just wasn’t enough time.
Luckily an ambulance happened to be in the area and a fast-moving team of paramedics promptly arrived to deliver the little girl.
“All of a sudden she moved and I knew she was about to come out,” Ms Nugent said.
“I’d say it was a matter of 10 minutes, if that.
“My mother was very thankful the ambulance got there on time.”
Mia Hannah Nugent was born at 12.07pm on Monday and weighed a healthy 7lb 14oz (3572g).
She is a new sister to Madison, 8, and Dylan, 4.
Ms Nugent has been lucky, as both her previous labours were also over quickly.
“We all knew it would be quick, but not that quick.
“This one was a lot different to my other labours.
“My husband Peter was at work and missed the whole thing.”
The Maryborough ambulance crew already had a non-emergency patient on board when they were forced to detour to the Mimosa Court home.
“We got there and she was already on the floor ready to go,” paramedic Cameron Evers said.
“She’d progressed most of the way and about a minute after we got there the head came out.
“It was very quick.”
Mr Evers had two student paramedics, Keith McArdle and Natalie Creighton-Jay, with him.
It was Mr McArdle’s birthday, so he got to cut the umbilical cord.
“His mum had called him and said ‘Wouldn’t it be great if you got a birth on your birthday?’ and lo and behold it happened,” said Mr Evers, who has delivered a few babies while with the Queensland Ambulance Service.
Lisa and Mia were taken to Hervey Bay Hospital, but are back at home now and doing well.
