Alleged thief tries to outrun dog

JADE Anthony Holmes was yesterday regretting his decision to try to outrun Mavro the police dog.

Holmes took his chances against the cunning canine when he was caught allegedly breaking into homes in Urangan on Tuesday night.

But someone should have told the Hervey Bay teenager that Mavro always gets his man and he may have thought twice about trying to flee the scene.

Holmes was yesterday nursing a sore leg after the dog caught up and bit him as he jumped a fence on Emerald Park Way about 10.10pm.

The dog held him down while police arrested the 19-year-old, who they allegedly found with a bag containing cameras and wallets.

He was later charged with five break-and-enter and stealing offences.

Holmes was yesterday remanded in custody in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court.

He told police the dog bite prevented him from walking to the courthouse and requested that a wheelchair be brought over.

But magistrate Graeme Tatnell instead dealt with the matter in Holmes’ absence.

On Tuesday night, police received complaints about a prowler from three Urangan addresses before the dog squad was deployed.

About 8.45pm police were called to a home on Stringy Bark Drive after the residents heard someone trying to get into their house.

The next call came from Moonstone Drive about 10pm.

Residents of a third home also contacted police, saying items were stolen from bags and wallets while they watched TV.

Sergeant Ian Grigoris and Mavro tracked Holmes down and he was warned to stop running before the German shepherd pounced.

Holmes will reappear in court on July 8.
