THE SQUALOR was bad but leaving part of the family behind not knowing if he would be fed has stunned Christine Weir of Boonooroo.

“You don’t leave family behind – what if he was a child?”

Jasper, an exuberant five-month-old Labrador cross, was abandoned on Monday when his family left him behind at their rental house in Maryborough.

Ms Weir, the landlord, said the family of five, including three children aged about 11, 9 and 2, had given her two weeks’ notice and were up-to-date with their rent but left the home in squalid conditions.

“I inspected the house a month ago and except for mould on the ceiling it was fine. The floor was mopped and everything. What happened?

“Yes, I have some bond money that can offset clean-up costs and at least the place can be cleaned and fixed. The worst part of it is that the tenants abandoned their dog at the premises too.

“I have tried as many doggy people as I could to give him a new home but with no success and have several dogs myself and can’t take another.

“He is temporarily staying with another tenant of mine in Maryborough ... I don’t want to send it to the pound just to be euthanised.

“I realise this is an all too common scenario and how disposable some people seem to think dogs are but there are those who treat their dogs as part of the family.”

Ms Weir hoped a Chronicle reader would offer Jasper a “forever” home.

“He was well fed and doesn’t have fleas but he was teased by the former tenants’ two-year-old boy so he’s is not overly tolerant of those under about eight years.”
