HERVEY Bay BigScreen Cinemas will today be one of the few cinema outlets in the country to screen the new Australian independent thriller Caught Inside.

The film is set for limited release and yesterday the writer and director of the film, Adam Blaiklock, spoke about the multi-award winning film and what influenced him when creating it.

The film is about a tight-knit group of surfers who take the opportunity to hire a boat and go on a surfing holiday in a secluded location.

Mr Blaiklock said these events were known for being male-dominated and it was an unspoken rule not to allow girlfriends or female friends on board the boat.

He was on a holiday like this himself when he saw a boat where this rule had been broken.

One of the girls was "taking advantage" of her captive audience of about six men, Mr Blaiklock said, and the atmosphere became intimidating because of one of the alpha-male tendencies of one of the men on the boat.

The scenario that Mr Blaiklock witnessed provided the inspiration for Caught Inside, which tells the tale of a man who invites his girlfriend and her female friend on the boat.

Ben Oxenbould plays the role of the testosterone-driven alpha male, hell bent on securing the attention of the young woman brought aboard the boat.

As the tension grows, the situation threatens to become violent.

Mr Blaiklock said making the film was one of the most liberating experiences of his life.

The cast and crew spent a month on board a ship filming, setting foot on land no more than three times during the filming and, because the film was shot chronologically, this helped build the tension as the film reaches its conclusion.
