ROMANTICS have less than a week to find the perfect gift to woo their sweetheart this Valentine's Day.

For those stuck for ideas, Westfield gifting expert Margaret Merten shares her Valentine's Day etiquette and gifting tips.

Everlasting love: Flowers and chocolates are staple Valentine's Day gifts for a reason - they please. Complement this winning gesture with a well-written card or special gift so she has something to keep forever.

Intimates: I don't recommend buying lingerie unless you've been dating for at least six months. Find out the essentials first - what size she is, what styles and colours does she usually wear? Above all keep it classy. Definitely no themed outfits unless she's made a special request.

Best foot forward: A killer pair of heels is a fantastic gift idea that's often overlooked. Go for something on trend and feminine.

Jewellery: Stick to simple, classic jewellery. If the romance is new, make sure you opt for something that isn't too personal like a locket or pendant. A more serious statement like a ring is appropriate for those long-term relationships.

Last minute: On the off-chance you manage to forget the most romantic day of the year, think quick. Call your favourite restaurant as they may have a spare table, drop in to your local centre on the way home from work to grab a dozen red roses, box of chocolates and bottle of perfume and make like you knew all along. The team at Westfield offer additional advice on how to master the Valentine's Day experience this year:

Power of the written word: No matter how lavish your Valentine's Day surprise or gift may be, your grand gesture means nothing without a truly special card that puts your love into words.

Pre-order flowers: To avoid disappointment, pre-ordering bouquets and flower arrangements at least three days before the day is recommended.

Pamper and spoil: Consider a voucher for a pamper experience she wouldn't normally buy for herself. Choose from a massage, hair treatment, facial, manicure, pedicure or the whole package to really show how much you care.

Prepare: Salons will be run off their feet, so ladies should lock in all hair, waxing and beauty appointments the week before Valentine's Day.

You'll avoid disappointment and make sure you have plenty of time to relax and enjoy getting ready before the big romantic date.
