14-year-old kid manages to drive 900km before cops stop him

A 14-YEAR-OLD boy has managed to drive more than 900km from Dysart, south west of Mackay, to Gympie before being stopped by police.

Police at Gympie stopped the white Pajero after a motorist noticed it driving erratically, WIN News has reported.

The discovery ended a search that had been running for more than a day, since the boy left a property apparently bound for Toowoomba or Dalby.

Detective Sergeant Robert Lowry said it appeared the child had stolen fuel along the way to keep the vehicle going.

A police media spokesman said the teenager has been charged with three counts of stealing, one count of wilful damage, one count of driving without a license, one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and one count of failing to stop a vehicle.

Charges also included fuel drive-offs, the spokesman said.

He will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.
