25kg loss a weight off Ivan’s heart and mind

EVEN after he had a pacemaker installed early last year, Ivan Roberts struggled with the side-effects of his dodgy ticker.

But after adopting a healthier lifestyle and dropping 25kg, the Chinderah resident's life and energy levels have been transformed.

Ivan, who suffers from the heart condition known as atrial fibrillation, says his cardiologist is delighted at the turnaround in his health since he changed his habits.

The bus driver hopes to inspire others to take control of their health by speaking out about his life changes which since February has seen his 1.77cm frame shrink from 110kg to 83.5kgs.

"We have climbed Mount Warning twice in the last six months, gone dragon boating, we regularly kayak and ride our bikes 10kms daily, I'm much more prepared to give things a go,' Ivan said from the porch of his Homestead Holiday Park home.

After trying to lose weight unsuccessfully using various diet programs over the last 20 years, it was Jenny Craig that finally worked for him.

"It was the only diet where I didn't feel hungry," he says.

Besides his health challenges, a "disgusting" pre-operation photo taken by his wife Susan gave him the determination to finally tackle his weight.

Susan has also lost 13kg on the program, and Ivan credits her support with helping him reach his goals.

"She's my rock," he says.

Ivan has dramatically dropped the amount of alcohol he drinks and now eats healthily in moderation with the occasional treat, and says he doesn't feel deprived.

He is confident he'll survive the Christmas/New Year silly season without falling back into his bad habits which used to include three or four glasses of wine every night and several beers on a weekend.

He has signed up for a five year maintenance program with Jenny Craig.

Ivan is also confident that adopting a healthier lifestyle will extend his working life with bus drivers required to pass an annual health check.

"I enjoy working," he says.

"If you've got a disease you've got to change your life."

Ivan's weight loss tips:

- Find someone to make lifestyle changes with so you can support each other.

- Realise how much and what you eat directly impacts your health

- Even if your parents had the health condition, it doesn't mean you're doomed to suffer from the same. It's likely you also adopted their poor lifestyle habits.
