$30,000 for spitting at police
A MOTHER of four who spat blood and saliva over two police officers was ordered to pay $30,000 in compensation to the men yesterday.
Nicola Margaret Beavan, 39, spat at the officers when they came to her aid during a fight outside a nightclub on April 26 last year.
Beavan was convicted of serious assault in April this year, and given a four-month jail term.
However she did not serve any actual time behind bars for the offence.
In Gladstone District Court yesterday the two officers, aged 41 and 32 respectively, were awarded $15,000 each to compensate for the anxiety, stress, depression and shock they had both suffered as aresult of the assault.
The court heard the officers had come to the woman's aid after she was punched in the face by another woman.
Judge Nicholas Samios said Beavan had attempted to knee one of the officers in the groin, before spitting blood and saliva over the men.
“The officer felt the cold, wet fluid land on his lower lip and enter his mouth. When he used the back of his hand to wipe his mouth he saw blood on his fist,” he said.
Both men had suffered anxiety as they waited for medical tests to learn whether they contracted any diseases.
Judge Samios said one officer now had trust issues and suffered a phobia as a result of the assault. Tests later found both men were clear of any diseases.
