$40 will go up in puffs of smoke

A PACK of cigarettes could cost $40 within four years after the Turnbull government introduced legislation to parliament to raise the tobacco excise by 12.5% each year from September 2017 to 2020.

"Research has shown (taxation) is one of the most effective ways of reducing tobacco consumption and preventing the uptake of smoking,”

Revenue Minister Kelly O'Dwyer (left) told parliament yesterday.

"Higher prices encourage smokers to quit,” she said.

Labor is likely to support the legislation after declaring similar plans before the Federal Election.
