Boy, 5, pricked by needle put in new school shoe

WHEN five-year-old Patrick Heinemann put on his new school shoes, the last thing he expected was to be pricked by a sewing needle.

But his mum Cynthia Koning is thankful that it didn't end up any worse.

She purchased his new school shoes from Kmart Gladstone early last month.

She has reported the issue to the chain store, but the results from investigations were even more shocking for the family.

"They found that the needle wasn't from any of their manufacturers. I understand accidents happen and people can make mistakes, but if someone has put this needle into a child's shoe and tried to hurt a child, it's just so wrong.

"I want other parents to know this has happened."

Kmart public relations manager Kelly Austin said the incident was reported to the customer service department.

"Kmart's review concluded that this is not a needle used in Kmart's footwear manufacturing process, but is from another source unknown to Kmart."

Now Patrick will continue to wear his brother's hand-me-downs.
