Australian Independents release whale rescue plan
A DEDICATED boat to tow stranded whales back out to sea would become policy if the Australian Independents came to power.
The leader and deputy of the Independents were in Maryborough and Hervey Bay yesterday to meet locals and discuss the region's issues.
Leader Dr Patricia Petersen said the recent whale stranding around Fraser Island proved the need for a multi-purpose whale recovery vessel.
"It will ensure the whales are taken off the beach and taken out to sea," she said. "It would assist boaties and anyone who's in distress, not just the whales. Even if it's for one whale a year I think it's worth it."
Dr Petersen spoke with flood-ravaged canegrowers in Maryborough and said more needed to be done.
"We would like a direct funding boost," she said. "Although the flood recovery package has been helpful it hasn't gone far enough."
Dr Petersen said the party also offered benefits for those looking to further their skills.
"We are the only party who are offering free HECS fees and free TAFE fees," she said.
