Carr happy to be called tosser - not so much 'bigot'

AUSTRALIA'S former Foreign Minister Bob Carr reckons it's a "badge of honour" to be labelled a "wanker", "tosser" and a snob by national media.

In Diary of a Foreign Minister, Mr Carr discusses the best choices for ties - Hermes and Bulgari - and compares flying business class to travelling in the "trans-Atlantic slave trade".

In one choice excerpt from the upcoming tome, he complains that the in-flight entertainment provides no English subtitles for a Wagner opera.

Mr Carr is also candid about his feelings as the tides turned against then Prime Minister Julia Gillard, with the travelling minister eventually siding with her political nemesis Kevin Rudd.

His criticism that the "pro-Israel lobby in Melbourne" had too much power during the Gillard Government was described as "bigoted" by Labor MP Michael Danby on Thursday morning.

Metropolitan media have mocked the former New South Wales Premier turned globetrotter.

Mr Carr said he would not abide being called a bigot, particularly given his keen interest in the history of the holocaust.

In the book, Mr Carr compares his stint as Foreign Minster to the work of Britain's Alexander Haig and Henry Kissinger, both of whom served for the better part of a decade.

When asked if it was "self-indulgent" to release his book despite being in the role just 18 months, Mr Carr said it was important information for the Australian public to know.

He said he took labels of wanker and tosser in good humour.

"If it adds to sales of a splendid book which tells Australia how government works, and raises money for my favourite charity to look after youngsters in poor countries, I will wear that as a badge of honour," he said.
