Graffiti offensive and costly

IT'S NOT uncommon to hear offensive language around the Hervey Bay Courthouse but for eight weeks anyone walking down the front steps had no choice but to read it too.

Graphic images of male genitalia and the words F*** You featured in black spraypaint on the retaining wall of a Queens Road property.

The words were clearly visible from the front of the courthouse and Hervey Bay Police Station.

A spokesperson for the police said they had received phone calls from members of the public and had spoken with the residents living in the home.

The spokesperson said the residents told them they had phoned the council and had been given “tips” on how to clean it off.

But yesterday it appeared someone had taken a different view and decided to cover the whole wall in colour graffiti rather than remove the offensive graphics.

Yesterday the council's community chief Peter Smith said the council had the power to remove graffiti from private properties but felt it would result in an “unreasonable burden” on the region's ratepayers.
