Morcombes receive Order of Australia medals

THE humbled Morcombes were among many inspirational leaders told they were the glue that held their communities together with their hard work in an age of increasing disconnect and isolation.

But a modest Denise said, through the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, she had seen communities across the country band together to support her slain son's legacy with little help from them.

"The Day for Daniel events, the different walks - that's people in different communities doing all that work, not us," she said.

Mrs Morcombe received her first trophy in 2011 when they won a Queensland child safety award and she now has her first medal, too.

Husband Bruce said receiving individual Order of Australia medals for child safety awareness at Government House in Brisbane on Tuesday was a true honour and he felt out of his comfort zone.

"People are just happy plodding away doing the community work they do and it comes as a bit of a surprise when it ends up where it did today," he said.

She said in a world where there was such huge social change - from population growth to population shifts to the city, technological advancement and new communications - their work was the bedrock that underpinned the strength of the Australian society.

The Morcombes were on day 20 of their 66-day national tour, spreading their child safety message and meeting with ministers around the country.

They fly back to Adelaide to continue the journey.
