PM puts charities at top of Christmas list

IN HIS first Christmas message as the nation's leader, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has encouraged Australians to donate their time or money to charities.

"Poverty, loneliness, illness, the loss of loved ones - these shadows hang heavier at Christmas," he said.

He singled out the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul Society, Meals on Wheels and Black Dog Institute, along with a local church in his Wentworth electorate.

Mr Turnbull also offered special thanks to Australian Defence Force personnel serving overseas at Christmas, and emergency services personnel.
