Toowoomba Catholic school teacher faces child sex charges

A FORMER teacher of a Toowoomba Catholic school has been charged with indecent treatment of children under 16 years of age.

The 44-year-old accused man and the school involved cannot be named for legal reasons.

It is believed the allegations date back to the mid-1990s and involve two boys under the age of 16.

The accused man, who The Chronicle believes no longer resides in Toowoomba, was arrested and charged in November last year.

The allegations include the teacher hosting the complainant children at his home where pornographic images were allegedly shown and that nude photographs of the children were taken.

The man, who was in Toowoomba Magistrates Court yesterday for the brief mention of the matters, has not been required to enter any pleas to one count of "indecent treatment of a child under 16 (indecent film)", two counts of "indecent treatment of a child under 16 (expose)" and one count of "indecent treatment of a child under 16 (take photograph)" as the charges appeared on the court list.

His solicitor applied for an adjournment so a registry committal on the charges could be done, indicating the matters would be taken straight up to the higher court.

Acting Magistrate Roger Stark remanded the accused man on bail and adjourned the case for mention back in the same court on May 21.
