Norfolk Island petition delivered to UN

A PETITION from a Norfolk Island residents group seeking protection from Australia has been delivered to the United Nations by leading human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson QC.

Long supported by Australia as one of its external territories, Norfolk Island is set to lose its local legislature on June 30 in favour of a regional council.

It was one of several reforms announced last year by the Australian Government to address "issues of sustainability".

Positives for the islanders include access to Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, but the Norfolk Island People for Democracy wants the UN to uphold their right to self-determination "in free association with Australia".

The ABC has reported that dozens of Norfolk Islanders have lost their jobs as the Australian Government takes over the provision of many services on the island.
