Security guard attacked

A SECURITY guard trying to break up a fight was assaulted with his own baton on the weekend.

Police are searching for whoever took off with the weapon following the incident at Hervey Bay in the early hours of Sunday.

Sergeant Darryn Morris of Hervey Bay police said security guards were trying to break up a fight involving up to 10 young adults outside McDonald’s on Boat Harbour Drive about 4am.

“When the fight was being broken up, the group turned on one of the security officers and he pulled his baton out to defend himself,” Sgt Morris said.

“He’s been assaulted from behind and someone had grabbed it off him and used it to assault him.”

The group had run off when police arrived.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the telescopic baton, a restricted item under the Weapons Act, can call police or Crime Stoppers.
