Teen fronts court over rape charge

A TEENAGER accused of assaulting and raping a woman in a Maryborough park has appeared in the city’s Magistrates Court.

The man was charged with assault with intent to commit rape and rape.

Police allege the offences happened at Queens Park on May 28, when the man was 17.

He is now 18 and serving time in prison for an unrelated offence.

He appeared in custody in the Maryborough Magistrates Court this week, where Prosecutor Senior Constable Steve Lord requested disease tests be ordered. The man did not enter a plea to either of the charges.

He was remanded in custody by Magistrate Neil Lavaring. The case will be mentioned in the court again on March 8.

The man’s family sat in the back of the court during the proceedings and waved to him as he was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs.
