Elderly man, 79, to face charges of child sex abuse

A warrant for the arrest of a 79 year-old man, who lives in a regional nursing home, and has 'significant mobility issues,' has been issued in the Mackay Magistrates Court.

The man is facing one charge of rape, one of attempted rape, and five charges of indecent treatment of girls under 16 (U14).

His legal representative, Kristie Doyle of Legal Aid, sought to have the matter moved to a closer court for mention.

"He is on notice to appear today on these historical matters," Ms Doyle said.

"I'm told by the director of the nursing home that he has ...quite a few medical conditions that will require a lot of assistance to appear in court.

"My application is to seek that the matter be transferred for mention on Friday, to allow him the ability to come to court to sign the bail.

"I understand and respect that eventually these charges will need to come back to Mackay."

Magistrate Nerida Wilson ordered the warrant to lie until Friday, so the man could attend a nearby Court via ambulance, or sign his bail at the nursing home.
