Accident on Elliot Heads and Hummock roads claims two lives

TWO people have died following a two-vehicle crash on the intersection of Elliott Heads and Hummock roads about 6am yesterday.

Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Martin Kelly said a female driving a small SUV was pronounced dead at the scene, while a man in a ute was found in a "gravely ill" condition and later died at the scene.

"By the time I arrived, 15 minutes after the accident happened, the person was gravely ill," Mr Kelly said.

"Despite best efforts we were unable to extricate the deceased.

"It's just a terrible tragedy."

Bundaberg Police said the man was aged in his mid-40s and the woman was in her early 30s.

Power had to be cut at the scene to allow emergency crews to work safely after an electricity pole was snapped in half where the wrecks of the two vehicles lay.

Mr Kelly said both drivers were local to the area.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating. Police are appealing for any witnesses to the crash to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
