Addiction service struggle to cope with ice addicts

WHILE police contend with the rise of ice in our community, addiction services are struggling to cope with the volume of people seeking help to kick the drug habit.

Bayside Transformations director Tina Embry said the prevalence of the drug was definitely noticed.

"It's coming through on our assessments with the guys that are presenting with ice more than any other drug," she said.

But, she said those trying to kick the habit are often drawn back in.

"It is definitely being offered to the guys who are going out," she said.

"It's everywhere."

Ms Embry said another concern with ice was the link it had with mental health issues.

"We have a lot more people with mental health issues than we do with any other drugs," she said.

Ms Embry said a part of helping kick the addiction was also addressing any mental health problems which may have resulted from drug use.

Overcoming the addiction was not as straightforward as some might believe.

"It depends on the person themselves," Ms Embry said. "Some are very triggered by certain things."

Ms Embry said it meant that for some drug users, just seeing something they associated with use of ice could spark a relapse.
