Aged care residents meet with horses in new therapy

FOR an animal of their size, horses have one of the gentlest souls.

This is why Freedom Aged Care diversional therapist Deanne Berry was keen to introduce a new therapy to residents at the Village Ct facility.

Equine therapy encompasses a range of medical treatments that includes activities with horses and other equines to promote physical and mental health.

Crows Nest trail riding business Cowboy Up recently paid a special visit to the aged-care facility with two horses.

"This experience encouraged residents to reminisce with each other about their experiences with their life on the land or their experiences with horses over the years," Ms Berry said.

"This therapy helped our residents with dementia through touch and improved their mood. Residents who are normally withdrawn became more aware of everything happening.

"It was a truly remarkable day."

One of the horses was trained for the Baz Luhrmann hit Australia.
