New Zealand man charged with causing bomb hoax at airport

WEDNESDAY 6.3AM: A 41-YEAR-OLD New Zealand man was charged late Tuesday afternoon with causing a bomb hoax, after police received information about an incident at the airport terminal, during which the man had alluded to having a possible explosive device in his luggage, only days after a Belgian tourist was fined $1500 for Friday's hoax.

The call came in about 1.15pm on Tuesday, leading to the terminal being evacuated.

Officer-in-charge of Gladstone Police, Senior Sergeant Jason Chetham said it was frustrating having a second evacuation in less than a week.

"It's a big inconvenience to the air carriers and of course all the passengers coming in and out," Snr Sgt Chetham said.

"You would hope that the message got out that even joking about those kinds of things is not very clever, but here we are again ... it's pretty frustrating to have them so close on the heels of each other."

Gladstone Airport Corporation chief Phillip Cash said he hoped people would consider the consequences before making "offhand remarks" at the airport, as they had to be treated extremely seriously.

TUESDAY 2PM: A SEARCH is currently being conducted by a specialist bomb technician after a threat was reported at the Gladstone Airport.

About 100 people were evacuated from the terminal.

A 41-year-old male, who it is believed was scheduled on a flight to Brisbane, has been taken into custody.

TUESDAY 1.15PM: THE Gladstone Airport has been evacuated after reports of a bomb threat.

A man in a black singlet is believed to have had the alleged bomb.

People were outside the terminal at 1.30pm.

Gladstone Airport was evacuated on Friday following a bomb hoax.
