Aldridge up for shot at title

TWO TEAMS of Aldridge State High School students will be on a smash and grab mission in Melbourne next week.

They’ll be aiming to smash their rivals and grab plenty of glory during the week-long Australian Volleyball Championships.

The Maryborough school will contest the 14 and open boys’ honours divisions, the highest divisions in the tournament.

You can be sure that boys won’t be making the long trip south just to make up the numbers – they are already the best in Queensland and they want a shot at becoming the best in Australia.

Both Aldridge teams won their state titles in style, going through their tournaments undefeated.

Now they are keen to carry on in that form in Melbourne.

The open boy’s line-up of Alec Higgins, Frank Richmond, Jett Nickson, Daniel McPhee, Carl Christensen, Tyler McKenna and Nathan Brake know what it takes to win a national title.

They finished second 12 months ago and their coach Rob Thiele said they were aiming to improve on that finish.

“The boys have played well throughout the year and are very determined to go one better this year,” he said.

“They are ready for it.”

Coach of the 14 boy’s team, Kris Tassotti, said his players, who are James Ethell, Mitchell Seefus, Shaun Brake, Kyle McGrath, Alek Calleja, Bo Lewis, Matthew Brain and Lachlan Houston, should feature in the hunt to win a medal.

“They’ve trained really hard for this week and are really looking forward to the challenge that awaits them,” he said.
