All aboard a life-changing voyage

I RECENTLY had the incredible privilege of filling in for the regular cook on the Lady Maryland, a replica 19th-century pungy schooner based out of Baltimore.

The beautifully designed ship is owned by the Living Classrooms Foundation, an educational non-profit that emphasizes ‘learning by doing’, and every summer it sails to New England with groups of gifted high-school students to teach them about ecology, marine biology, conservation, and nautical history.

Even though I spent most of my time below deck fighting sea sickness as I cobbled together three meals a day for the 20 people onboard, I still got to see humpback whales and dolphins as they swam past the ship’s bow, star-filled skies as we sailed through the night underway to Provincetown, and bio-luminescent plankton when we were anchored near Greenport, Long Island.

It was a life-changing experience for me, so I can only imagine what it was like for the wide-eyed kids onboard.
