All hail the new GG, His Excellency Sir Peter Cosgrove

HE helped bring East Timor independence, resurrect Queensland from devastating natural disasters and was this week knighted by Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

Former Defence Force chief Sir Peter Cosgrove on Friday added a new responsibility to his huge list of achievements - that of Australia's 26th Governor-General.

Sir Peter Cosgrove was sworn in as the Queen's representative in Australia before political and public dignitaries including Chief Justice of the High Court Robert French in Canberra.

The military man said he was "at once humbled and proud" to assume the office, saying without becoming "partisan" he would embrace the opportunity.

His full title following the ceremony at Parliament House is His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retired).
