All eyes on council waiting to see what is uncovered

EDITORIAL: All eyes are on the Fraser Coast Regional Council right now - from ratepayers, to media, politicians and the State Government.

The Queensland Treasury Corporation's credit review of the council and Wide Bay Water was welcomed by Chronicle readers last week.

But the scrutiny has deepened after it was revealed Premier Campbell Newman requested an investigation into exactly how state funding was used to raise Lenthall Dam.

There are strong arguments against the State Government being seen to interfere in local government authority matters, but these investigations have not been taken lightly, nor were they rushed into.

They are a symptom of deep mistrust between ratepayers and those who were elected to represent them on the local council.

Let's hope these investigations will clear the air so our elected council, and the people of the Fraser Coast, can pursue our common goal of stabilising and revitalising our region.

We need clarity and transparency in local government if we are to move forward.
