Almost $5 million pledged to upgrade notorious roads
OLD Toogoom Rd and River Heads Rd will have a multi-million dollar upgrade if LNP candidate for Hinkler Keith Pitt is part of an elected Coalition Government.
Mr Pitt and Shadow Minister for Transport Warren Truss announced Old Toogoom Rd would be upgraded with a $1 million capped contribution from a Coalition Government and $3.75 million would be invested in fixing a stretch of River Heads Rd.
"Old Toogoom Rd badly needs its upgrade finished off, and a $1 million contribution from a Coalition Government will mean work can get underway as soon as possible," Mr Pitt said.
"The RACQ has previously named it as one of the top five worst individual roads in Queensland.
"We have consistently argued for money to be spent on Old Toogoom Rd - but it has been studiously ignored by the Rudd Labor Government for years.
"Likewise, as well as the current works happening along the road, River Heads Rd needs ongoing work along its length to bring it up to scratch for the thousands of locals and visitors who use it.
"Accommodation, hospitality and retail play a vital role in the local economy and their growth depends on good transport links.
"Fixing another section of River Heads Rd will boost Hervey Bay's tourism industry and inject more money and jobs into the region's economy."
The funding for River Heads Rd is half of the proposed upgrade's full cost and would require a matching contribution from Fraser Coast Regional Council.
Shadow Transport Minister Warren Truss said the Coalition had always championed the upgrading of critical regional roads.
"Keith Pitt has absolutely made the case for funding for these two roads, and I look forward to the day I can return with Keith as the local member to check out progress on bringing them up to a higher standard," he said.
