Aloisi rises from ashes of Phoenix defeat

IT WAS not even two years ago when a 1-0 loss to Wellington saw John Aloisi get sacked from his first A-League coaching position at the Melbourne Heart.

That was back in December 2013, and it seems like a lifetime ago, with Aloisi to face the Phoenix for the first time since then as the Brisbane Roar coach - at Westpac Stadium tomorrow.

The former Socceroos hero notched up just eight wins from 39 games at the Heart.

But this season, the 39-year-old has coached his new team to two wins from as many games - against Western Sydney and the Central Coast - with the Roar holding top spot on the ladder.
Since his ill-fated stint at the Heart, Aloisi went on a dream fact-seeking mission at football giants Barcelona.

He also gained experience as development coach at the Melbourne Victory.
So much has happened in less than two years, Aloisi had totally forgotten that last fateful time he coached against Wellington.

"Do you know what? I didn't even realise that," he said.

"That was where I did my apprenticeship, and not only there, but since then I went overseas and visited clubs and coached young boys at Melbourne Victory.

"I'm better for it."

Roar defender Jack Hingert, who helped set up a brilliant goal against the Mariners from the back field last Sunday, is a strong believer in Aloisi's attacking philosophies.

"We always want to play attacking football. We've always been a team that's done that, and John's kept that attitude going," he said.

Aloisi confirmed goalkeeper Michael Theo would not travel to Wellington due to a quad strain he suffered against the Mariners. Jamie Young will be his replacement, with the Roar hopeful Theo will return next week.
