Ambulance overturns as it tries to avoid collision

An ambulance has landed on its side after a crash outside the Cape York Hotel in Cairns.
An ambulance has landed on its side after a crash outside the Cape York Hotel in Cairns.

Witnesses have described seeing an ambulance attempt to avoid a collision at the intersection of Spence and Bunda streets in Cairns before it rolled just after 9am.

The driver of a white Kia Optima was also involved in the crash just outside the Cape York hotel.

Police are controlling traffic around the crash site as paramedics work to free the Kia driver. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

It is not known yet if there was a patient inside the ambulance.

Police have blocked off Bunda St in both directions with Spence St still open.
