Andy King takes top coaching job at Surfing Australia

ELITE surf coach Andy King has been appointed Surfing Australia's new National Coach.

King replaces Martin Dunn, who has taken on a new coaching development role in Surfing Australia's expanding high performance program.

The 36-year-old King is a former top 35 WQS surfer and was Head Coach of the Red Bull Surfing Program for the past seven years working closely with two-time ASP World Champion Mick Fanning and fellow World Tour competitors Julian Wilson, Adriano de Souza, Michel Bourez and Tiago Pires.

"I'm really excited to be able to move into this role and help the development of surfing in Australia," King said.

"The facilities at the HPC are incredible and having access to all the talented surfers going through there is a great opportunity as is being able to work with the coaching team already there.

"I'm also looking forward to working on where surfing is going and how it'll be in three to five years time."

Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark said King's appointment further strengthens the organisation's high performance program.

"We are extremely excited to have Andy King on board as our new National Coach," Stark said.

"Andy brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role as both a talented past professional athlete and as a world class coach who has worked with some of the world's very best surfers.

"Andy's appointment strengthens the Surfing Australia high performance program and Australia's best athletes will benefit from working with him. We welcome him to the growing team at Surfing Australia.

"His appointment is in line with the new focus of the Surfing Australia HPC program as a part of the ASC Winning Edge Strategy to ensure we continue to deliver Aussie world champion s."

Director of the Australian Institute of Sport Matt Favier said: "This is a really strong appointment for Surfing Australia. I am confident that with the calibre and experience of Andy King working with the current and next generation of Australian surfers, these athletes will be well positioned to progress their competitive ambitions into the future."

King will join Surfing Australia's team of high performance coaches including Sport Science Manager Dr Jeremy Sheppard at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre at Casuarina in northern NSW.

"I'm really looking forward to continuing to build our elite athlete program alongside Andy King," Dr Sheppard said. "I believe he brings a great suite of skills to the job that will allow us to be successful in our programs.

"From our discussions so far, I'm really looking forward to working with Andy on so many areas, and I& rsquo;m confident that I'll do my job better from the knowledge and experience that he'll bring to our partnership."

King starts in his new role at this weekend's ASP Pro Junior, the Be the Influence Surf Pro in Coffs Harbour. The National Coach role includes overseeing the Surfing Australia High Performance Scholarship Program and Head Coach of Travelsim Team Australia, which last month returned home as World Junior Teams Champions.
