Anglers out to tag giant marlin

GAME fish of all species beware; there is a flotilla of experts coming to try to snag you.

It's time for the 2010 Hervey Bay Deep Sea Fishing Classic and 18 top game fishing boats are out on the waters off the tip of Fraser Island.

The weather conditions aren't conducive to great comfort for the anglers, but that won't worry them as they hunt for the giant marlin.

Doug Sanderson on Rammpage actually hooked up on an estimated 1000lb monster last year, but his battle to tag and release the giant lasted just seconds.

“This year I have the very best of reels and line and no matter the size my crew and I will be in the battle,” he said.

While the fleet is down by almost 50 per cent from last year's tournament the Hervey bay Game Fishing Club was still buoyant about the value of the tournament and its future.

The competition started at first light this morning and will conclude about noon on Sunday.

All fish are tagged and released with estimated size and weight recorded for the judges.

The crews will compare tales and scores at the presentation dinner on Sunday night at the Boat Club.
