Angry Gladstone lover’s axe threats

CONFRONTED in her yard by a former boyfriend wielding an axe, a frightened Gladstone woman could only react by repeatedly telling him to drop it.

The 28-year-old armed man ignored her calls.

Prosecutor Sgt Barry Stevens told Gladstone Magistrates Court the woman was the man's former partner.

He said the man went to her home in February and left a written note in her bedroom.

When she arrived home he doorknocked then grabbed a long axe from a garage and hid behind a pillar.

"When she came out and walked past he appeared from behind the pillar and held the axe in a threatening manner," Sgt Stevens said.

"She told him to drop the axe many times.

"He yelled at her that she was a cheating whore, she became afraid.

"He swung the axe like a golf club and smashed a pot plant."

Sgt Stevens said a man at the woman's house then told him to drop the axe but the armed man acted threateningly toward him, asking his name and "waving the axe around".

He dropped the axe when a teenager said the police were being called.

He was later arrested.

"It is a very serious charge. It was fortunate he showed some restraint and did not injure anyone," Sgt Stevens said.

The man pleaded guilty to threatening violence (domestic violence) to a woman with an axe with intent to alarm on February 7; threatening violence to a man with an axe with intent to alarm; and breaching police bail reporting conditions.

Lawyer Jun Pepito said it had been "an on and off relationship" of nearly three years. The man was under stress after losing his job, doing casual work and under financial strain, and suffering depression which he was now receiving counselling for.

"He was missing her and went to her house," Mr Pepito said.

Magistrate Penelope Hay said it was "serious, violent offending," in which he attempted to manipulate her. She sentenced him to three months jail, immediately suspended for two years.

He must do six months supervised probation.
