Anthony Milford outstanding in Maroons audition

ANTHONY Milford and Darius Boyd have starred in Brisbane's 36-0 demolition of the Wests Tigers at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

Milford in particular was instrumental in the huge win, notching up three try assists and a try as the Broncos ran rampant against a Tigers outfit who were without Luke Brooks and Chris Lawrence (both injured), as well as Mitchell Moses, who was released to Parramatta on Tuesday.

The performances of both Broncos players couldn't have come at a better time with the Queensland Origin team to be named on Monday - but it's sure to give Maroons coach Kevin Walters an even bigger selection headache.

Boyd's in a two-horse race with veteran fullback Billy Slater for the No.1 jersey, while Milford is among the contenders to replace Johnathan Thurston in the halves should the Maroons star not overcome a shoulder injury in time for game one.

"He's the Australian fullback for a reason, his skills tonight have been great," Walters said of Boyd on Friday Night Footy on Fox League.

"The conditions tonight weren't ideal but he's taken some great options with his passing and his running. That's why the decision is going to be quite difficult as to put at fullback for Queensland.

"We're so fortunate to have two quality fullbacks in such good touch.

"Milford and Boyd have really showcased their skills, partocuarly in the last 10 minutes (before halftime)."

Walters said Milford was very much in the frame should Thurston not play in the series opener.

"Milford at some stage will play Origin down the track. He may get an opportunity if Johnathan Thurston isn't fit enough for game one," he said.

"Milford, having worked with him at the Broncos in 2015, I know his capability. He's a very exciting player and in the last couple of weeks he has stood up without Ben Hunt and really taken control of his Broncos team in conjunction with Nikorima.

"I like the way he plays so straight and direct at the line. He puts the defence under enormous pressure."
