Asis climbs rankings

JACK Asis is close to title fights and breaking into the world top 10.

The featherweight boxer, who now calls Smithy's Gym and Toowoomba home, is ranked 18th in the world in his division.

Asis will fight undefeated Maxsaisai Lokam, from Thailand, at the pro fight night at Rumours International on October 19.

A win there could propel Asis into the mandatory contender position for the Oceania and Pacific Boxing Federation featherweight title.

"Jack has gone number 20 overall in the world and that particular fight should nearly put him in the top 10. This is where we're going with him," trainer Brendon Smith said.

"With this fight happening here, it's a must-win situation.

"I'm really excited with this one.

"It's a big challenge for Jack, because we're not only fighting an undefeated, very good fighter from Thailand, but we're fighting a southpaw, a lefty.

"In the world rankings and around the world titles up there, there are a lot of southpaw boxers, so this is a very big test for Jack up against an undefeated southpaw."

Asis is wary of Lokam.

"I'll try my best and I'm always careful. Only one punch, lose. Only one punch, win," he said.

"I'm very careful because he has a very good record."
