Aussie cricketers could play at London's Olympic Stadium

IN 2012, Sally Pearson won a famous gold medal for Australia at London's Olympic Stadium.

In 2019, the same ground - now known as London Stadium - could host Steve Smith or David Warner scoring a World Cup century.

According to media reports in the UK, the Australians are set to play England in front of up to 55,000 fans at the venue during the 2019 World Cup.

That's a huge crowd by any standards but especially in England. Right now the country's highest-capacity cricket venue only holds 28,000 people.

However, getting London Stadium ready for cricket is far from a simple task.

According to The Sun, the two matches the ECB hopes to have at the venue would cost about $1,653,000 million to stage, with much of the money spent preparing the ground to host international cricket - drop-in pitches are needed and the outfield has to be returfed.

With that cost in mind, The Sun claims tournament organisers are hopeful the two matches played at the venue will be between Australia and England, and India and Pakistan.

Last month ECB chief executive Tom Harrison confirmed his organisation was hopeful of hosting matches at the venue, which was found to comply with the dimensions required to host a one-day international in January.

"It would be an amazing statement to have 55,000 to 60,000 people in a ground in the UK watching World Cup cricket," Harrison said. "It has the right dimensions to play meaningful cricket and there not a lot of other stadiums around the country that have got the capacity to fit the boundaries in."

The venue is currently being used by English Premier League side West Ham and hosted rugby matches during the 2015 World Cup.
