Aussie Mo month grows bit by bit
WHEN Graham Howells left Britain four years ago to start a new life down under, Movember was quite the rage.
In Australia he found the innovative fundraiser, which doubles as a celebration of the moustache, didn’t reach quite the same heights.
It’s getting there but every bit helps and that’s the main reason Mr Howells and the team at Hoolihans Irish Restaurant and Bar in Hervey Bay are going to miss the bit under their noses when they shave this month.
“Given that one in six men will be affected by prostate cancer it is a very worthy cause,” Mr Howells, assistant manager at Hoolihans, said.
“It’s a funky, fun type of fundraiser which works well with our establishment.”
All tips to Hoolihan’s staff during the month will go straight into the Movember fund, with a big Hoolies Mo party on November 28 rounding off proceedings.
On the prospects of him sprouting whiskers to match Merv Hughes or Burt Reynolds, Mr Howells said it has “never been an easy task. But it’s worth looking daft for a month.”
Along with about 12 floor and kitchen staff growing taches will be owner Glenn Fallon who has just shaved off his old one.
“There will probably be a few scruffy ones and a few lame ones but Glenn will probably be king.”
