Australian Federal Police appoint 126 airport cops in QLD

THE Australian Federal Police have appointed 126 new airport-based officers to various locations across the state.

Federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan said on Wednesday the new officers have also been appointed special constables of the Queensland Police Service which allows AFP officers the authority to operate under the state's police laws.

"Protecting the safety and security of travellers is paramount to law enforcement," he said.

"This integration of powers will contribute to Australia's national security.

"This model will also strengthen law enforcement responses to planned and unplanned events, including the G20."

The decision to appoint officers to the special constable role follows an agreement reached between the Queensland Police Service and Australian Federal Police last year.
