Aussie sheep killed in Pakistan

THOUSANDS of Australian sheep have been brutally killed, and in some cases, buried alive during a massive cull in Pakistan, according to international news reports.

The sheep were believed to be among 20,000 live exports deemed unfit for human consumption due to outbreaks of scabby mouth disease, salmonella and anthrax.

According to news.com.au, one disturbing report in a Pakistani paper read "Like a giant mass of wool, bloodied and filthy, they lay in trenches, slit open, stabbed or clubbed to death, while many still wriggled with some life left in them, soon to be buried alive".

Animal welfare officials have condemned the treatment of the sheep.

Australia's Department of Agriculture is investigating.
