Australian trucks to get health check

AUSTRALIA'S fleet of trucks and other heavy vehicles is about to get a major health check.

National Heavy Vehicle Regulator Consultation inspectors will conduct a total of 9000 safety audits on articulated B-doubles, road trains, buses and plant equipment in August and September.

NHVR chief executive Sal Petroccitto said the information would lead to an Australia-wide "consistent inspection system" for the country's 520,000 heavy vehicles.

Currently, each state and territory compiled its own data, he said.
