Autopsy to be done on tourist

AN AUTOPSY is being performed on the body of a German tourist who died after choking on food at Fraser Island.

Patrick Roma, 33, was camping on the eastern side of the island, near the Maheno wreck, when he choked on a large piece of steak on January 13.

Police said his body was sent to Brisbane yesterday for a post-mortem examination, before it will likely be flown back to Germany.

It is understood Patrick was with a large group that included two trained paramedics when he began choking about 7.30pm.

The pair and the island and rescue helicopter paramedics could not dislodge the meat and it was only when Patrick arrived at the Hervey Bay Hospital some hours later that it was removed.

With his father by his side, Patrick’s life support system was turned off after doctors found no brain activity.
