Autopsy today to help piece together Riverwalk body mystery

A MAN whose lifeless body was found on the Quay St Riverwalk will undergo autopsy this morning as police try to piece together how he died.

Bundaberg Police Inspector Kev Guteridge said the dead man, believed to be in his 40s, was found on the popular walking track by a woman exercising about 5.30am yesterday.

Insp Kev Guteridge said police were still waiting to have the man's identity confirmed yesterday afternoon.

"We believe the man does have links to the Bundaberg area," he said.

"We're not releasing any names."

Insp Guteridge said at this stage, the death was being treated as suspicious.

"All deaths that we can't find an explanation for are treated as suspicious until we can," he said.

"Bundaberg detectives are investigating the matter."

The body was found at the bottom of an embankment about 5m high but Insp Guteridge did not say whether a fall was believed to have contributed to the man's death.

"We are trying to determine the cause of his death," he said.

"We're investigating all aspects in relation to the scene.

"A comprehensive examination of the scene and other items in the area is being conducted."

While Insp Guteridge did not elaborate on what those items found at the scene were, a green piece of material - possibly a blanket or sleeping bag - was visible at the top of the embankment directly above where the man's body was found yesterday.

The body was found in an area behind the Bundaberg Bowls Club and a large area around it was cordoned off for hours yesterday as detectives and forensic officers examined the crime scene.

A blue tent was erected around the man's body to shield it from passers-by as police conducted investigations.

The autopsy is expected to be conducted in Rockhampton this morning.

Anyone who had contact with people in that area or heard or saw anything that may assist the investigation is urged to call Bundaberg Police on 4153 9111 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
