Rock Off Hervey Bay to host state scooter qualifier
QUEENSLAND'S best scooter riders will show off their skills when Rock Off Indoor Skate Park hosts the state qualifiers on November 14.
The much-anticipated event was confirmed by Australian Scooter Association, and park owner Tim Earle said it was a major boost for regional competitors.
"We're the first regional qualifiers in Queensland," he said. "Previously people had to travel to Brisbane or the Gold Coast and that limited numbers.
"The fact we're hosting it makes it far more accessible for more regional riders."
Scooter riding is one of the most popular extreme sports thanks largely to its relatively simple access.
Scooters are usually far cheaper than bikes and skateboards, and that has been reflected in the number of junior competitors.
"A lot of extreme sport athletes start on scooters, then when they get to 15 or 16 they transition to BMX," he said.
"We're stoked to host the qualifiers but it means we've got a lot of hard work ahead.
"We're rebuilding the back part of the park and we'll have a good number of ramps and roll-ons."
A number of quarter and half pipes, along with grind and jump boxes will give competitors a much larger number of scoring opportunities come the start of competition.
"The interest so far has been fantastic," he said.
"We'll easily fill most of the fields. We encourage and hope to see more girls competing. "We've had a number of pro riders say they'll come up for it as well."
Earle said the biggest positive for the event was that it put the spotlight on regional competitors, who may not have previously been able to travel to Brisbane.
The state qualifier is one of a number of events Earle has planned for the local calendar, with best trick and big air competitions on the horizon.
Rock Off Indoor Skate Park is located on Boat Harbour Dr, Hervey Bay.
