POLL: Billions will be spent on Christmas foods

THE Australian Retailers Association has predicted more than $19 billion dollars will be spent by Australian's on food this Christmas.

Queensland University of Technology consumer expert Dr Mortimer said the annual expenditure had risen by about 2.5% when compared to last year.

He said grocery shoppers would continue to stock up on Christmas party treats, fresh foods for Christmas Day and provisions to "tide them over" while stores are closed throughout the season's break.

"The giving and sharing of food at Christmas time with family and friends is a long-held tradition," he said.
